Police chases lead to arrest

A Pickering resident is facing 48 charges following two police chases in two days.

On Friday, Oct. 16, Durham police attempted to stop a blue Honda Civic on Whites Road in Pickering when it drove away at high speed, running a red light and narrowly missing traffic. Officers stopped the chase due to safety concerns.

The next day, officers spotted the same car on Ritson Road South in Oshawa and again attempted to stop it. Once again, the vehicle drove off, running a red light at King and Bond streets. Once again, police stopped the chase due to safety concerns.

A police investigation identified the driver, who was wanted for several shoplifting and gas theft cases across the region. Officers arrested the man without incident at his home in Pickering on Sunday, Oct. 18.

A 50-year-old of Whites Road in Pickering faces 48 charges, including 21 counts of driving while disqualified, nine counts of breach of probation, seven counts of theft under $5,000, two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and two counts of failing to stop for police.
