Pandemic recovery entering Phase 2 Friday

Durham Region is preparing to enter Phase 2 of the provincial recovery plan from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The province recently announced additional regions, including Durham, can re-open starting Friday, June 19 as part of Phase 2 of the provincial plan.

The first stage of Phase 2 on June 8, which did not include Durham.

Durham Regional Chair John Henry says this Phase 2 of the provincial recovery plan means certain businesses in Durham can reopen for business, including restaurants, bars, hair salons, malls, and more.

“This step is a direct result of the dedication of our residents, working together to help protect the health and safety of our communities,” says Henry. “You stayed home, practiced physical distancing, and followed proper hand hygiene guidelines. You directly helped to flatten the curve,” he adds.

Henry says COVID-19 still remains a serious public health risk and is reminding the community to continue following proper public health practices.

“I know we are all working together to ensure Durham Region remains one of the most vibrant, innovative and diverse communities within the Province of Ontario. Thank you to everyone who continue to stand by our local businesses and shop local,” he says, adding he also thanks all the public health officials, essential and frontline workers who have stood at the forefront throughout the pandemic.

“As a community we stand together. We continue to show our adaptability and perseverance through this unprecedented challenge,” says Henry. “Stay health. Stay safe. Stay #DurhamStrong.”
