New dean announced for Trent Durham campus

Scott Henderson is replacing Joe Muldoon, who is retiring after 33 years with the university

There will be a changing of the guard in the top spot of Trent University Durham GTA soon, as current president Joe Muldoon has announced his retirement.

Muldoon will be replaced by Scott Henderson as the dean and head of the Trent Durham campus.

Muldoon has been with Trent University for 33 years, serving as the head of the university’s Durham campus since January 2013.

His first position with Trent in 1986 was as the university’s first research officer. He also spent time as the coordinator of research and graduate studies, assistant to the dean of arts and science, special advisor to the provost and director, and held the position of the office of the provost.

Under Muldoon, the local campus student population has grown from 900 to 1,400 students.

He played a role in developing several Durham campus-specific programs, such as the communications and critical thinking program, child and youth studies, masters in management, and policing and community well-being.

Muldoon has also spent the last two years working on a $35 million expansion of the campus, containing 200 bedrooms? (residence?), one 100-seat and two 64-seat classrooms, offices and research space.

Muldoon will still be involved with the school after his retirement, as he will continue to the coach the men’s varsity curling team.

His official retirement will begin on Sept. 1.

Muldoon’s replacement, Henderson, will officially take over the position on July 1 for a five-year term.

Henderson is currently the chair of senate at Brock University.

He has also served as the head of the department of communication, popular culture and film at Brock.

Henderson is a Trent alumnae, graduating in 1988 with an Honours Bachelor of Arts in English and History.

He also received a Ph.D and a Master of Arts in film studies from the University of East Anglia in Norwich, England.

In his research he has looked at music and locality, youth culture, popular culture and identity, British cinema and popular culture, and Canadian popular culture.

As the dean and head of Trent’s Durham campus, Henderson will report to both the president, the provost, and the vice-president academic.

He will also be responsible for all academic, administrative and external activities.
