In partnership with Durham’s school boards, the Durham Region Police are providing more support for students in the form of resource officers.

Two Durham cops will be going back to school.

Durham police has announced that it is launching a new pilot project in partnership with the region’s two school boards – the Durham Catholic District School Board and the Durham District School Board – that will see several schools receive additional police support.

“The (school resource officer) will support a fewer number of schools with the intent to focus more time in those school communities developing relationships with students, staff and parents, supporting educators and delivering both formal and informal crime prevention programs,” states a news release from Durham police. “The (officer) will be a member of each school’s “Safe Schools” team.”

The program will run for the rest of the 2015-2016 school year before being evaluated to see if it is viable to expand the program.

Const. Cowan will be the school resource officer for four Oshawa schools: Monsignor John Pereyma Catholic Secondary School, GL Roberts Collegiate and Vocational Institute, Glen Street Public School and Monsignor Philip Coffey Catholic School.
