Men’s soccer wins first game of OCAA season
Saturday afternoon saw the Durham College men’s soccer team earn three points for the first time in 2015 conference play.
The Lords opened the season with a 1-0 loss on the road at Cambrian College, but evened the season series with a 2-0 victory at Vaso’s Field.
Both teams were evenly matched throughout the contest, with final shots on target for each squad being nine aside.
At halftime, the Lords and Golden Shield were tied 0-0.
In the 68th minute, Durham struck first. After striker Sasa Vukoje (Etobicoke, Ont.) was taken down in the box, the Lords were awarded a penalty kick, which Colin Reilly (Whitby, Ont.) buried past Evan Philips.
Durham would score again in the 90th minute with Cambrian pressuring. The Lords put the ball down field towards striker Austin MacDonell, who took off toward the ball and goal. MacDonell, Philips and a Cambrian defender all arrived at the ball at the same time with the keeper and defender losing the ball in front, leaving MacDonell alone to tap the ball into the net.
The goal sealed Durham’s first victory of the season. Jon Codrington made nine saves in the match for the win, which puts Durham at 1-2-1 on the year, tied with Centennial and Fleming in the OCAA east division.
