On Dec. 1, former Oshawa city councillor Robert Lutczyk pleaded guilty in an Oshawa courtroom to kidnapping and weapons charges stemming from the kidnapping of city solicitor David Potts in 2012.

According to an agreed upon statement of facts, Lutczyk kidnapped Potts from the driveway of his home on Oct. 15, 2012. Facing legal and monetary problems, Lutczyk pointed the blame, and targeted his anger, towards Potts.

After visiting an industrial yard in Whitby, a site owned by Lutczyk, the pair travelled to a nearby Tim Hortons where a police chase ensued.

Fleeing back to the industrial site, Potts was able to escape unharmed before Lutczyk disappeared into the unit. Lutczyk surrendered himself to police following a 26-hour standoff.

Lutczyk, who served as a councillor between 2006 and 2010, had spent a little more than three years behind bars awaiting trial.

He is expected to be sentenced in Oshawa on Feb. 4.

More details to come.
