Keeping kids healthy

Junior and senior kindergarten students at St. John Bosco Catholic School learn about exercise as one of the ways they can stay healthy. Andrea Bau, the pharmacist at Custom Care Pharmacy, has made several stops at the school to teach children the benefits of eating healthy, keeping clean and being active.
Anyone with children knows how much of a struggle it can be to get them to eat healthy and keep clean. Kids never seem to want to eat their vegetables, and if there’s something dirty to play in, they gravitate to it like a magnet.
Custom Care Pharmacy is hoping to change that.
Pharmacist Andrea Bau, along with other members of her team, were recently at St. John Bosco Catholic School to help teach kids what it takes to eat well and be healthy.
Students learned all about what foods are and are not healthy – yes, fries are unhealthy, even though they are made from potatoes.
Kids are also learning about bacteria and germs, and just how important it is to wash your hands so you don’t get sick.
To show just how well students wash their hands, Bau used Glo Germ gel, which glows under UV light. If you wash your hands well, your hands won’t glow, and you know you’re on the right track. If your hands glow brightly, then it’s time for some pointers on keeping those hands clean.
Students from junior kindergarten through to Grade 1 receives a colouring book talking about what pharmacists do. Children in older grades built models of E. coli, with grades 4 and 5 also tackling bacteria.
Custom Care Pharmacy offers a free vitamin program at their pharmacy for children. If parents feel that their children are not receiving complete nutrition from their diet, they may register to receive an ongoing free supply of multivitamins every 60 days. There is no obligation required to join the program and the family may withdraw at any time.
