Human trafficking charges following investigation at Oshawa hotel

A Toronto man is facing human trafficking charges after a 20-year-old female was brought to Oshawa to perform sexual acts for money.

An investigation by the Durham Regional Police Human Trafficking Unit found the suspect allegedly advertising sexual acts on the behalf of the victim and taking a cut of the profits. The suspect befriended the girl in Scarborough and placed her in an Oshawa hotel in February 2018.

The 23-year-old male has been charged with material benefit from sexual services from a person over 18, advertising another person’s sexual services, failing to comply with a recognizance, and unlawfully possessing a schedule II substance (cannabis). He was held for a bail hearing.

In Durham Region, the DRPS has set up a Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 4888. Police encourage the public to call this line with any information related to human trafficking.

Anyone with new information about this incident is to contact A/Det. Davies of the Human Trafficking Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5603.
