Heroin shipment intercepted

Durham police have arrested an Oshawa man they say was attempting to ship thousands of dollars worth of heroin through Canada Post.

Earlier this month, DRPS’ Drug Enforcement Unit received a tip that a package containing 208 grams of heroin was being shipped to an Oshawa address.

On Thursday, Jan. 14, a male suspect went to a Canada Post location in Oshawa, retrieved the package and drove off. In the area of Simcoe Street North and Aberdeen Street, the suspect stopped his vehicle on a side street, at which point officers attempted to arrest him by conducting a vehicle stop. However, the suspect accelerated, hitting an unmarked cruiser being running through a stop sign and hitting a car headed north on Simcoe.

After a brief struggle, the suspect was arrested. No serious injuries were reported.

Police say the value of the seized drugs was $62,000.

A 36-year-old male of Iribelle Avenue in Oshawa has been charged with possession of heroin for the purpose of trafficking, importing heroin, dangerous driving, failing to stop for police and failing to comply with a recognizance.

Anyone with further information on this investigation is asked to call Det. Const. Chambers at 1-888-579-1520, ext. 5831.
