Help conserve water this summer
Durham Region is reminding residents to help conserve water this summer by only watering their lawns on certain days.
Residents are being asked to practice odd-even watering, based on the home address, or by only watering grass when necessary, from now until September.
Odd-even lawn watering is mandatory during the summer months under the Regional Water System Bylaw 89-2003.
According to the region, a healthy lawn requires 2.5 centimetres (or one inch) of water per week, including rainfall.
“Water conservation is especially important during the hot summer months,” says John Presta, Durham Region’s director of environmental services. “Small changes, like following our odd-even lawn watering practice, can help to make a big difference in terms of conserving our municipal water supply. We should all keep water efficiency in mind when doing our daily activities.”
