General Motors of Canada (GM) has reached a new milestone with 2 million masks made. It plans to provide 10 million face masks over the next year.

The federal government contracted GM to make the masks in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which are being produced at its Oshawa Operations facility.

GM received its Medical Device Establishment License on April 22.

With support from GM’s global supply chain, the company sourced materials, built a ‘Canadian Mask Making (CMM)’ clean room with enhanced safety protocols, installed the required equipment, and recalled and trained 60 workers for two shifts of production in Oshawa in partnership with Unifor.

Production of the masks officially began on May 26.
