Durham police have made arrests in two separate animal abuse cases.

Although very similar in nature, both investigations are separate and investigators, with the assistance of the Provincial Animal Welfare Services, arrested and charged two individuals.

On Oct. 3, Clarington Animal Services located a stray dog near Concession Road 10 and Mosport Road in Bowmanville. The dog described as a Pit Bull Terrier mix was extremely emaciated and taken to a veterinary office in Newcastle. The dog passed away several days later due to health conditions.

On Oct. 13, around midnight, a citizen located a female Pit Bull Terrier mix, black and white in colour. The dog was located in extremely poor health near Concession Road 9 and Enfield Road in Clarington. The surviving puppy, Minnie, was taken to a local veterinary clinic for medical attention.

Minnie is currently recovering in a foster home and is in good health.

Police have arrested and charged a 28-year-old Oshawa female and a 34-year-old Whitby female with abandoning an animal, unnecessary suffering to an animal, causing distress, standards of care, and two counts of administrative requirements for animals.

Durham police thank the community and Team Chelsea volunteers for their assistance in the investigation.
