Coming weeks crucial for Oshawa

The next two weeks will be crucial in the fight against COVID-19, as social distancing and self-isolation are more important than ever.

Over the next couple of weeks, Oshawa residents need to stay home. It isn’t just a recommendation, it’s a need.

Right now residents in a long-term care home are fighting for their lives, as 27 residents and six workers at Hillsdale Terraces have been diagnosed with the virus. Of those 27, six have died.

Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter has also declared a state of emergency for the city, something he was hesitant to do initially. He is pleading for residents to stay inside and stay safe.

Thus far, China has been able to reopen tourist sites, while also seeing COVID-19 numbers decline due to social distancing. While there is a possibility of the virus recurring, it was the fact the country’s population stayed together by staying apart that they were able to reopen these attractions.

Right now Ontario is seeing increases in cases in the hundreds everyday, but with social distancing, those numbers will decline.

While it may be tempting to go to Lakeview Park and take a walk, or go for a run, do so in your own neighbourhood, or find exercises to do in the house. While both activities can be done on your own, it’s a risk either way.

If you are able to work from home, do it. While it is an adjustment, with many-a-home filled with distractions, it will keep you and your co-workers safe.

The only reasons to leave the house are simple: to get groceries or medicine, to take the dog (if you have one for a walk), and for emergencies. Certain activities can wait, or there are alternatives which can be done at home.

It cannot be reinforced enough – stay home, stay safe, and stay healthy.
