Can’t do one without the other

Dear Editor,

In regards to a letter May 13 concerning a “social safety net,” the writer claims it is something most Canadians desire. Most of us would agree that a safety net is needed for Canadians that are going through a rough patch, or are unemployable because of some disability.
The problem is this safety net costs money, plenty of it, and we need a strong economy to provide that money.
Alberta has, for years, been a safety net provider to “have not” provinces such as Nova Scotia and Quebec, and now Ontario also.
With the socialists running Alberta now, the funding tap may have to be turned off down the road if they shut down energy production and pipeline expansion as many socialists feel is the way to go.
If they go too far, energy companies will abandon Alberta for greener pastures. Who knows, Alberta may become a have-not province also.
It is fine to be compassionate towards the less fortunate, but it takes a strong economy to fund that need. You can’t provide one without the other.
