Busy week for local Olympians

With one event down, Oshawa’s Ben Donnelly will hit the ice for the final time in the PyeongChang Winter Olympics this week.
He will join teammates Jordan Belchos, Ted-Jan Bloemen, and Denny Morrison as they take on the U.S. in the 5,000 metre men’s speed skating pursuit consolation round on Wednesday, Feb. 21.
Team Canada failed to qualify to compete for a medal after finishing seventh in the quarterfinals on Sunday, Feb. 18, finishing 2.44 seconds behind frontrunner South Korea.
Donnelly previously finished 31st out of 35 competitors in the 1,500 metre men’s speed skating event on Feb. 13.
The Oshawa native finished 5.67 seconds behind gold medal winner Kjeld Nuis of the Netherlands.
Whitby’s Cameron Stones, a member of Canada’s men’s bobsleigh team, will also be competiting on Wednesday.
Chris Kelly of Bomanville, who is the captain of Canada’s men’s hockey team, has posted one assist in three preliminary games so far in the Olympics.
Canada’s opponent in the quarterfinals on Feb. 21 was still undecided as of press time.
