Busy few months for Rotary Club

Members of the Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood really are people of action this fall, as they make plans for three big Rotary events in the community, it was announced today by Linda Porritt, president of the Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood.

“Together with the Rotary Club of Oshawa, we are hosting the Rotarians of Rotary International District 7070, from Toronto, north to Alliston, and east to Belleville, and their guests to a luncheon for the Second Annual Revival of Rotary Friendship Day In Oshawa’, at Parkwood Estate on Sept. 8. It is expected that 100 Rotarians and their guests from the 56 Rotary Clubs in southern Ontario, and many community leaders from Durham Region will be in attendance,” Porritt says.

“This is a day when Rotarians and community leaders get together, meet new and old friends, at Parkwood, the national historic treasure of Oshawa, and have the opportunity to hear the keynote speaker, Michael McGovern, the Chair of the Rotary International PolioPlus Committee. He is the volunteer chair of the worldwide Rotary International PolioPlus Committee which provides strategic direction to Rotary’s polio eradication program and he also represents Rotary on the Polio Strategy Committee of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. Mike is responsible for working with Rotary leaders around the world and Rotary staff in raising over $100 million each year and in advocating to governments and others to contribute additional sufficient funds to end polio’, Porritt added.

Two weeks later, on Sept. 22, the Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood will be hosting , with the Optimist Club of Ajax, The Durham Regional Police, the Durham District School Board and the Whitby Lions Club, the grand re-opening of the Kids’ Safety Village of Durham Region.

The newly renovated and expanded Kids’ Safety Village of Durham Region is now open for business.  We have expanded the main teaching building to include a fire safety component.  Durham Region fire departments will teach fire safety in the new interactive classroom equipped with a full kitchen, bedroom and bathroom with features that simulate fire and emergency situations.

The $750,000 expansion and renovation includes larger washrooms, and better accessibility throughout the Village.

Plans are also underway for October 24, , World Polio Day, the day which recognizes the tremendous work done by Rotary Clubs world-wide,  in their efforts to eradicate polio from the world.

The two Rotary Clubs in Oshawa (Oshawa and Oshawa-Parkwood), together with Durham College, will be hosting 200 Rotarians and guests in the new Global Classroom in the new Centre for Collaborative Education at Durham College.

The Rotary Clubs of Durham Region have made major donations to the building of this classroom. The day will start with a live feed from Rotary International about Rotary efforts to eradicate polio, followed by a live feed from the new Global Classroom to Rotary Clubs , colleges and universities, world-wide as the Rotary Club of Durham Region receive proclamations of from local politicians.
