Blue Flag classification a pipe dream

Dear Editor,

Councillor Amy England, surely you aren’t serious.

Rather than a blue flag designation, I believe a Red Flag should be posted in an area leading to the beach.

I am not sure why you would think that a lot of people would have a lot of good things to say. I sure don’t hear many good things. The travel getting to the beach is enough to put people off.

The trip to the beach including going past the overgrown fenced-in areas, on to the old rusted petroleum tanks and building in another fenced-in area.

Then there’s over the small bridge and water with its banks in need of attention. We then have another fenced in area with piles and piles of steel beams and pipes.

You do get a good view of the cargo ships unloading and the noise and smell of the diesel fuels.

I have yet to see the old mainstay Tommy’s fish and fries place open.

Drive down Farewell and Harbour road and tell me that looks inviting.

I live in the vicinity, by the way.

I drive to the lake to check the waves and wind. I do this before I leave to go to Bowmanville or Whitby to launch my boat in Lake Ontario. You are aware we no longer have a boat launch or marina in Oshawa harbour. We had good facilities for us to use, but it was discontinued in favour of commercial interests.

I can only imagine the things to come with the rail spurs and planned ethanol plant and God knows what else, like the congestion of increased truck traffic. I don’t see a lot of people heading to our beaches under these conditions in the future, Blue Flag designation or not.
