Annual battery collection returns next week

Region has recovered more than 219,000 kgs since 2012

batteriesDurham residents will have the chance to get rid of their used or unwanted batteries during the week of Nov. 4.

The region’s fall battery collection will take place that week for households that receive curbside Blue Box services.

According to a media release, up to 92 per cent of battery components are recyclable and recoverable.

Recycling batteries can also eliminate heavy metals such as mercury and cadmium from entering into the environment.

Since 2012, the region has collected more than 219,000 kgs of batteries through its collection program.

Residents received two orange labels in their 2018-2019 waste collection calendar guide. A printable version of the label can be found at durham.ca/battery.

Residents should affix the label to a clear, sealable plastic bag containing their used or unwanted household batteries. The bags should be placed on top of paper blue boxes for collection.

Keeping batteries separate from other blue box materials helps workers clearly identify them and residents are asked to not put loose batteries in their Blue Box.

Batteries should be stored in a cool, dry location, away from any flammable materials prior to recycling.

During storage, battery terminals should not be in contact with conductive materials. The terminals on lithium and nine-volt batteries should be covered with masking tape prior to storage.
