An unfair attack
Dear Editor,
Recently, MP Colin Carrie distributed an extremely misleading document to constituents in Oshawa, calling into question transparency of members involved with their unions. His government is claiming that charities that do incredible work in our communities need more oversight, and should not be involved in politics.
No other organization in Canada – public, private or crown corporations, non-profit organizations, charities, political parties, even fully-publicly funded government departments, ministers, members of parliament or senators – are required to report and publicly disclose details of their internal finances.
This is an attack on unions and the members who choose to self-associate as a certified union in Canada (Section 2d of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms).
This current government that MP Colin Carrie refers to has even refused to disclose the amount of public funds spent for political staff and top officials, including Harper’s former chief of staff, Nigel Wright, citing “privacy.”
Where is the transparency in that?
