A double play for Durham College

Softball

This fall, Durham College will play host to a pair of major softball championships starting with the Canadian Collegiate Softball Association (CCSA) national championship from Oct. 9 to 11 followed by the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) championship on Oct. 23 and 24. This marks the first time both competitions have been held in the same city in the same year.

With fall just around the corner, students will soon be filling the lecture halls at Durham College and they will have more than just the welcome back parties to look forward to.

The college is set to play host to a pair of major softball championships this fall.

The Canadian Collegiate Softball Association (CCSA) national championships will take over Alexandra Park from Oct. 9 to 11 and just two short weeks later, the Lords will host the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) provincial championship on Oct. 23 and 24 at Durham Field.

Ken Babcock, the college’s director of athletics, tells The Oshawa Express the institution is looking forward to the opportunity to host these events, which will showcase some great athletics.

“We are very proud to be hosting the national championship for the first time in school history,” Babcock says.

Not only will this be the first time Durham is hosting the CCSA championship, but it also marks the first time the CCSA and OCAA championships are hosted in the same city in the same year.

“What an exciting time for softball in Durham Region,” Babcock says.

The national CCSA championship will include the top eight teams in Canada, with the Western Mustangs out of London looking to extend their four-year championship run.

As tournament host, the Lords have already sealed their spot in the championship. The club will be looking to top the team’s best finish of a silver medal in 2012.

The OCAA championship, falling only two weeks after the national competition, will see an exciting two-day, double knockout competition between the four best teams throughout the upcoming season.

The Lords last hosted the provincial championship in 2011 – the year which also saw them win gold on home turf. Now, the Lords will be looking to snap a three-year gold medal drought, their longest since 1991.

A victory would mark the Lords’ 17th OCAA title.

Keep your eye on the fields as the month of August wraps up, as pitchers and catchers will be reporting to training camp on Aug. 25 with the rest of their teammates arriving Aug. 27.
