A Day of Change in Durham

A Day of Change is coming in Durham, as local schools, business and churches look to help homeless and street youths this November.

The Day of Change is a fundraiser that raises money for The Refuge, a charitable drop-in centre serving homeless, hungry, and hurting youth aged 16 to 26 in the Durham Region.
Last year, 18 schools from the DDSB, DCDSB, PVNCCDSB and KPRDSB and three local businesses participated and raised more than $16,000 in one day.

All funds raised went directly to support The Refuge’s programs for homeless and street youth in Durham.

This year, the fundraiser will be virtual to keep the event contact-free.

The Day of Change aims to bring about relevant discussion regarding youth homelessness and the friendly competition between classrooms, businesses and church groups are encouraging everyone to work together to make a difference in the community.

Each year, The Refuge serves over 18,000 meals and snacks to nearly 500 youths who use its services between 9,000 to 10,000 times.

This year, the organization has experienced a surge of need in the homeless community during the COVID-19 pandemic.

As of Aug. 31, The Refuge had already served 842 individuals and served over 16,000 meals and snacks.
Contributions go directly towards providing these youths with hot meals, necessities such as hot showers, laundry facilities, blankets, towels, clothing, household essentials and bus tickets, as well as transformative programs and counselling to provide life skills, counselling and positive healing.
