Ground was officially broken for a new north Oshawa public school in a ceremony on April 27. The school, still unnamed, will hold 519 students and be the latest addition to the Durham District School Board (DDSB).

“We are so excited to be opening a new school…schools bring the community together. They are inclusive places, where everyone belongs. So, we’re excited in moving forward in opening this new school,” said Lisa Millar, director of education at DDSB.

The two-storey, 62,775 square foot building will have 24 classrooms with a four-room child care centre. The building will be fully accessible and is slated to open in September 2019. It is located at 800 Greenhill Avenue.

“This school will be accessible to all and representative of our community, and that’s what we want, a building that makes everyone feel welcome,” said Millar.

The newest addition to the DDSB was announced by the province in November 2016 alongside another new north Oshawa school for the Durham Catholic District School Board. The new facilities are aimed at preventing overcrowding in other nearby schools.

The province stated that nearly $21 million will be used for the projects, along with the purchase of a former school site in Bowmanville that will be used as a French language school.
