Winter weather not here yet

By Graeme McNaughton/The Oshawa Express

There was snow blowing around in some parts of the city over the weekend, and temperatures went below the freezing mark for the first time in months. But don’t worry – Old Man Winter isn’t here quite yet.

“It’s not going to be long lived,” Geoff Coulson, a warning preparedness meteorologist with Environment Canada, tells The Oshawa Express. “We’re looking at a change in the temperatures yet again…to bring us back to more seasonal temperatures.”

In fact, Coulson adds, residents can look forward to warmer than normal temperatures right through to the end of the month.

“The forecast I looked at was indicating that from Monday (Oct. 19) right into Halloween, overall the trend is for temperatures to be somewhat warmer than normal,” he says. “(The snow squalls) are more of a reminder, a shot across the bow that there is going to be more cold air in the coming weeks, but the warmer weather will be asserting itself for the rest of October.”

The long-range models are also showing November to be slightly warmer than usual as well.

“As we move into November, while no doubt there will be some days here and there that are on the cold side, overall the trend for the next six weeks or so is to have temperatures somewhat warmer than normal.”
