Volunteers needed to monitor lead
The region is looking for residents willing to give them a little bit of water. For sampling, that is.
As part of the region’s lead monitoring program, the works department is calling for volunteers from across Durham – both residential and non-residential – to allow water samples to be taken from their internal plumbing.
To be part of the program, you must be at a residential, industrial, commercial or institutional facility constructed pre-1990 with lead water service lines, copper pipes with lead solder or brass faucets or fittings containing lead; must be on the municipal water system; the primary tap must not have a water-filtration device on it; and the location must have the ability to allow 30 to 35 minutes of standing time in plumbing prior to samples being taken.
Participants in this program will have their water taken twice a year, which will then be analyzed for lead, pH and total alkalinity.
To learn more about this program or to participate, contact the region’s works department at (905) 668-7711, ext. 2059. Please be prepared to disclose your name, contact details, address, age of building, type of plumbing and any treatment devices being used. A limited number of participants will be chosen to take part in the program.
