UOIT gets $1M gift
The University of Ontario Institute of Technology will be able to help out local residents wishing to attend school thanks to a generous gift.
The Joyce Foundation, established by Ronald V. Joyce, the co-founder of Tim Hortons, donated $1 million to UOIT for the establishment of the Joyce Foundation Success Awards, which will support first-year students from Durham Region and Northumberland County in financial need.
“The Joyce Foundation has demonstrated its commitment to improving the lives of Canadian youth time and time again,” states Dr. Tim McTiernan, UOIT’s president, in a news release. “This gift to University of Ontario Institute of Technology students will not only remove financial barriers to education, but empower them to develop into citizen leaders who will impact our society.”
“The Joyce Foundation believes in opening the doors to education for those who face financial need,” states Ron Joyce, an advisor trustee with the foundation. “An investment in youth who dream of post-secondary training and education is an investment in their future and the well-being of the community. The University of Ontario Institute of Technology equips students with these tools for success.”
