Suspicious device found on foot path
Durham police safely disposed of a homemade explosive device found on a footpath.
Officers responded to a call regarding a suspicious device found on a footpath running between Greenwood Avenue and Marquette Avenue at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 22. According to police, the device, which has aerosol cans taped to a can and a wick attached, appeared to have been lit prior to being found.
The device was safely detonated by the DRPS Explosive Disposal Unit, with nearby roads shut down to ensure the public’s safety.
Video surveillance of the area found two males, age 10 to 12 years old, light the wick on the device at approximately 2 a.m. before running across Greenwood to Park Road South. The flames extinguished moments later.
Police say that no damage or injuries were reported.
