Six residents caught up in vehicle wrap scam
Have you been contacted recently with an offer to make some extra cash by putting advertisements on your car? Durham police are warning the public that this is a scam.
According to police, residents have been contacted by a company that says it is willing give people the chance to earn money by wrapping their vehicles with ads. If the victim agrees, they are sent a cheque with instructions to deposit it into their personal account a keep a portion for themselves as payment, with the remainder to be deposited into an account said to belong to the company that will wrap the vehicle.
However, police warn, these cheques are counterfeit and when the bank rejects it, the victim is left on the hook for the money, with the money sent to the other account being profit for the scammer.
Police say six Durham residents have fallen victim to the scam, with cheques ranging from $2,000 to $4,500.
