Receive an email about speeding? It may be a scam

Durham police are warning the public about a new email scam being reported in the region.

According to a news release from DRPS, several residents have received an email telling them they were caught speeding and includes a fine that is immediately payable. Police believe that links in the email may load malware on to your device, which could damage it and/or access its protected information.

Police advise residents to not click on links in emails from people they don’t know and to never provide personal info or money to people or businesses you are unsure of. Please delete any emails such as these that come in.

Anyone wishing to report a fraud in Durham Region is asked to contact DRPS at 1-888-579-1520.
