Durham police are still on the hunt for suspects in the shooting death of 18-year-old Darius Thorne, killed on Feb. 8 inside a Quebec Street apartment.
On that day, DRPS officers received a call to the area around the Quebec Street apartments at 1:30 p.m. regarding a gunshot being heard. When they entered the building, officers found Thorne lying in the hallway with a gunshot wound. He was rushed to hospital, but later succumbed to his injuries.
A post-mortem examination was scheduled for Feb. 10, and homicide investigators have canvassed the area.
A later release from DRPS stated that police do not believe it to be a random incident.
DRPS tells The Oshawa Express that they are waiting for further information from homicide investigators before releasing any further details surrounding Thorne’s death.
Since his death, there has been an outpouring of sympathy for the young man who was a well-known former high school basketball player at Pine Ridge Secondary School in Pickering. A Go Fund Me page has been set up to help his family cover funeral costs, raising over $17,000 in three days, nearly half of its $35,000 goal.
“A son, a brother, a friend, a companion, a superstar, and one of the realest people most people have ever encountered. Darius was an intelligent young man with a big heart and he will always be that person,” the page reads.
Thorne marked Durham Region’s third homicide of 2017, and the third in Oshawa. On Feb. 11, DRPS announced the region’s fourth homicide after a deceased 33-year-old male was discovered in a home in Ajax. A release from DRPS state the male was shot. A post-mortem examination was scheduled for Feb. 12.
