Navarro commits to Durham basketball
The Durham Lords women’s basketball program is excited to announce the commitment of Oshawa native Alyssa Navarro for the 2017-18 season.
Navarro brings experience to the Lords from the Durham Chameleons Basketball Club and LFB (Scarborough) programs. With the Chameleons, Navarro earned a spot in the U-13 – Division 5 championship. At LFB, where she played from 2014-2016, the team earned U-19 – Division 3 champion status. They also placed fifth in the U-19 – Division 1 championship.
The incoming nursing student is excited to begin playing for coach Heather LaFontaine.
“I have not played for [LaFontaine] before,” said Navarro. “But I know that that she has seen me play and I am honoured to be a part of her team now.”
Navarro is a soon-to-be graduate of Father Leo J. Austin Catholic Secondary School in Whitby where she earned junior girls basketball MVP and Junior Female Athlete of the Year honours.
Father Leo J. Austin C.S.S is coming off of a very strong season where Navarro helped to lead the way. They finished the regular season with a perfect 7-0 record and recorded 98 more points than the next best team.
They completed their undefeated season by walking through the playoffs to win the Lake Ontario Secondary School Athletics (LOSSA) championship and clinch a spot at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) championship.
“Attending the 2016-17 senior girls OFSAA basketball championship was an incredible experience,” said Navarro. “Being able to play with a group of girls who were eager to play and learn about the game was amazing.”
The Lords continue to prepare for the upcoming 2017-18 year, which opens with an exhibition game against the Sheridan Bruins on Sept. 23, 2017.
