More vaccines coming to pharmacies

Residents will soon be able to get more vaccines at their local pharmacy.

Starting Dec. 15, pharmacists will be able to administer vaccines for 13 preventable diseases, including Hepatitis A and B, typhoid and rabies. These vaccines will be available to anyone above the age of 5.

“Immunization plays a key role in keeping people healthy by providing a safe and effective way to prevent the spread of infectious diseases,” states Dr. David Williams, the province’s chief medical officer of health, in a news release.

“This change will allow pharmacists to administer more vaccines. It will make it easier and more convenient for Ontarians to get the vaccines they need to guard against disease and maintain good health.”
Vaccines available under the province’s publicly funded immunization plan will be covered, while the remainder will have to be paid for.
