Man facing charges following weekend arsons

An Oshawa man is in custody after several fires were set over the long weekend.

Between 3:40 a.m. and 5:10 a.m. on Saturday, May 21, police investigated eight separate fires: a garbage bin at Prinewood Centre, a car fire on Simcoe Street, a shed, outdoor garage and two dumpsters at Oshawa Central Collegiate and brush fires on Nassau Street and Marquette Avenue.

While investigating the Nassau brush fire, an officer began searching nearby, finding the Marquette fire. There, the officer spotted a suspect and placed him under arrest. Police say the man was found with fire starting materials and four knives.

A 25-year-old male of Waverly Street South in Oshawa has been charged with four counts of arson causing property damage and one count each of arson with disregard for human life, possession of incendiary material and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace.

Anyone with further information on these fires is asked to call Det. Const Grigoriou at 1-888-579-1520, ext. 2737.
