Local youth make “waves” through art

An upcoming exhibition will shine a spotlight on the creativity of local youth.

M.A.D. Youth Durham will be hosting its first show, titled “WAVES,” at Mansfield’s Cabaret in downtown Oshawa.

The event is timely with National Youth and Youth Art Week taking place in Oshawa May 1 to May 7. The exhibition itself will take place on May 10 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

As one of the first major events put on by M.A.D. Youth Durham, a community support group for Durham’s media, art and design-inclined youth, the “WAVES” exhibition will feature works by emerging artists across multiple disciples.

The evening will kick off with an official opening, including an art market, with all proceeds going directly to the artists.

The second part of WAVES will be an art party, with scheduled performances by DJs Flamongo and Brock Edwards.

Participants in the event will have the opportunity to meet and mingle with likeminded individuals and discuss their artistic aspirations.

“For a lot of the artists involved, WAVES is an opportunity to dip their toes into the experience of being involved in an exhibition,” says WAVES curator and local artist Liz Morris, whose own works will be on display. “It’s a great way for these artists to get their start in the industry and gain confidence. We’d love to see the community come out to show their support for these young artists.

The opening event will start at 7 p.m., with the art party kicking off at 9:30 p.m.

The exhibition will remain on display for the month of May.
