Hot car is no place for pets
With the hot summer weather here to stay, the province is reminding residents that leaving pets in hot, unattended cars is not only unwise – it is also dangerous.
The province advises residents to never leave their pet in an unattended vehicle, as the temperature inside will become much hotter than it is outside.
Signs of heatrstroke in animals include excessive panting, drooling and listlessness. If you witness these symptoms, seek veterinary attention immediately, move the animal to a cool area and offer it drinking water.
For long car rides, the provinces also recommends having fresh water, toys and pillow for your pet, as well as taking the time to get your pet out of the car to exercise.
“Summer is the time for road trips, outdoor fun and enjoying hot summer days, but it’s also a time of potential danger, for both you and your pets,” states David Orazietti, the minister of community safety and correctional services, in a news release.
“Following these simple steps will help ensure your pets are safe and can enjoy the summer months just as much as you do.”
