Generals drop a pair in opening weekend

The Oshawa Generals failed to grab a point as they kicked off their season on the road across Northern Ontario.

The absence of captain Anthony Cirelli, defensemen Mitch Vande Sompel and Riley Stillman and starting goaltender Jeremy Brodeur were all felt as they continued their stints at NHL training camps.

Despite jumping ahead 2-0 in the first period off goals from Eric Henderson and import Renars Krastenbergs, the Gens could not hold on to a victory against the Sudbury Wolves, eventually losing the game 4-3. Starting goaltender Kyle Keyser, recently acquired from the Flint Firebirds, stopped 26 of 30 shots in the loss.

Domenic Commisso added the additional tally.

The Generals were back in action the next day, this time against the Soo Greyhounds, who pummelled Oshawa’s thinned roster on the way to an 8-5 victory.

Robbie Burt managed a pair of goals in the game, with Jack Studnicka, Joe Manchurek and Commisso adding the others.

The Generals were outshot 40-27 in the match and gave up four power play goals.

Oshawa is back in action tonight (Sept. 28) in Peterborough before their home opener on Sept. 30 at the General Motors Centre.

On Oct. 2, as part of the club’s 80th anniversary celebrations, Marc Savard’s No. 27 will be retired.
