It will be a great five-year anniversary celebration for RMG Exposed next month after the gallery received a record number of submissions for its annual photography auction.

The juried photography auction and fundraising event for the gallery saw 407 submissions from photographers across Canada.

“The word is definitely out there and we’ve built it into a great event,” says Sam Mogelonsky, the gallery’s manager of marketing and communications.

The event can help young photographers establish themselves in an industry that can be sometimes hard to break into, and this year, Mogelonsky says the gallery also received a record number of student submissions.

“I think we really managed to tap into the student population at the college,” she says. “Part of RMG Exposed is inspiring the next generation of young photographers.”

The photographs of the final 50 selections are donated to the gallery for the event and then auctioned off.

The jury will award prizes for different categories of photography and the top submission will receive the CIBC Wood Gundy Emerging Photography award along with a solo exhibition at the RMG in the spring.

The event, which kicks off at 7 p.m. on Nov. 14, will also include an artist project from Katrina Jennifer Bedford, a professor of media arts at Durham College. The project carried out over the course of the night is a projection-based installation of an animated disco ball.

“We are looking forward to celebrating with the artists, their families and the community,” states Donna Raetsen-Kemp, the RMG’s CEO, in a news release. “This exciting event furthers photography in Oshawa and we are thrilled to have so much support for the RMG from both at home and across Canada.”
