Fighting for jobs
Drivers heading east on Highway 401 ahead of the Canada Day long weekend may have noticed some signs hanging from overpasses at Simcoe and Albert streets. Unifor Local 222 were the ones behind it, reminding motorists passing through Oshawa about the city’s car assembly and advocating to keep jobs here. This was part of the union’s recently launched public awareness campaign ahead of negotiations with Generals Motors in the coming months. Unifor has said if the automaker does not dedicate any product to the Oshawa plant, it will not sign a new deal.
