Durham College and UOIT well represented at 2017
Summer Universiade in Taiwan
Durham College and UOIT will be well represented at the 2017 Summer Universiade being held in Taipei, Taiwan until Aug. 30.
Chris Cameron, sports information and special events coordinator for Durham College and UOIT, will join Team Canada’s delegation as a communications officer at this Olympic-style event.
Cameron, who has been working on campus since the fall of 2014, will partake in a number of tasks for Team Canada. His primary duties include looking after social media, press releases and photography as necessary – similar to his work with Durham College and UOIT.
“In my job, I get to cover the best university athletes in the province, so to have the opportunity to do that on an international stage is something I’m really looking forward to,” Cameron says.
Cameron will be joined by Kylie Bordeleau, Katherine Koehler-Grassau, Peyvand Mossavat and Farzad Yousefian from the UOIT women’s soccer program and Adam Tomlinson who will represent the University and Team Canada in taekwondo.
This year’s Summer Universiade will be the 29th edition of the games, which has been played every two years since its inaugural event in 1959.
Similar to the Olympics, the Summer Universiade consists of multi-sport games that are played on the international stage. Between the opening and closing ceremonies, there are 22 sports that will see a number of countries compete for gold. In 2015, there were nearly 13,000 university-level athletes in total.
“It was an unexpected opportunity that came along, but one that I am looking forward to,” said Cameron. “It’s an honour to represent Canada, and it’s something I’ve never had the opportunity to do before. It wasn’t until we met in June as a mission staff and communications team that it really started to sink in that I would be representing Team Canada and just the sheer size and scope of these games.”
A graduate of St. Thomas University in Fredericton, NB with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications and Journalism, Cameron has since pieced together a solid media resume.
Leading to his current position, he freelanced for The Canadian Press and Brunswick News Inc., and been the sports editor in the past for TC Media’s newspaper, The News, in New Glasgow, NS.
