Canada Russia junior series returns to Oshawa this fall
City previously hosted games in 2006 and 2013
Oshawa is one of six cities selected to host a game in the upcoming series between some of the top junior players in Canada and Russia.
The 2018 CIBC Canada Russia Series is scheduled for Nov. 5 to Nov. 15, 2018.
Oshawa’s Tribute Communities Centre will host the fourth game of the series on Nov. 12.
The six-game competition features regional teams from the Ontario Hockey League, Western Hockey League, and Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
“Over the past 15 years we’ve seen the Canada and Russia rivalry ignite passion in CHL communities across our great country,” said Canadian Hockey League president David Branch in a media release. “This is truly a special event that showcases many of our league’s best players, and future Canadian National Junior Team stars who will compete to defend gold on home soil at the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championship in Vancouver and Victoria.”
Since the event began in 2003, Canada has dominated the series, posting an overall record of 61-22-1-6 and winning 12 of the 15 series.
The matchup has evened up a bit in the past decade, with five of the last eight series coming down to the final game.
Oshawa previously hosted in the Canada-Russia series in 2006 and 2013.
Oshawa Generals GM Roger Hunt says the organization is gracious to have been part of efforts to bring the series here again.
“I was certainly part of it in 2013; it was a sell out crowd and it was great,” Hunt says. “You’re basically seeing a collection of superstars from the CHL and Russia before they become NHL players.”
