Buffalo television station profiling City of Oshawa

PBS documentary to air in October

An American television station is looking to share some stories of the City of Oshawa.

WNED-TV, a PBS affiliate in Buffalo, will bring its ongoing series “Our Town” to the city in June to help residents, organizations, and businesses tell the story of the community in a television production.

This one-hour primetime television special will explore Oshawa through the cameras of the people who live here.

“Our Town Oshawa,” the 19th in the “Our Town” series, will air on WNED-TV in October.

In a media release, station officials state while Oshawa is known for its prominence in the automotive industry, it is also gaining a reputation as an education and health sciences leader in Ontario.

The documentary will also look at cultural landmarks in Oshawa, ranging from Parkwood Estate to the University of Ontario Institute of Technology.

“This program creates a special opportunity to bolster community pride, increase tourism, and help community members throughout the region to better understand their neighbors,” a media release states.

Community videographers will tackle the question, “What is special about our community?” under the leadership of WNED employees.

After local volunteers have completed capturing their videos, the footage is brought back to WNED studios to be edited into the one-hour production that will be broadcast across southern Ontario and western New York.

Those interested in volunteering as a producer/videographer can contact Christy May at WNED-TV at 1-800-678-1723 ext. 284 or by email at ourtown@wned.org.

Volunteers are asked to attend one of two pre-production organizational meetings scheduled for June 4 and 5 in Durham Region.

Those meetings aim to answer any questions about the project and include a brainstorming of subjects to videotape for the special.

At the end of the meeting, volunteers will choose a topic and spend the next two weeks capturing video of their topic.

WNED-TV will return to Oshawa June 21 and 22 to conduct interviews with each of the volunteers.

Prior to the broadcast premiere in October, the station will host a screening of the program in Oshawa.
