A day without water

It is something many take for granted: you turn the tap in the kitchen sink, and water fit to drink comes out. While this may be the case now, there is still a need for investment in water infrastructure systems – or else the region could face a day without water.

The Region of Durham’s works department is participating in the Value of Water Coalition’s Imagine a Day Without Water campaign.

“An investment in our drinking water and wastewater systems is essential to securing a bright and prosperous future for generations to come,” states John Presta, the region’s director of environmental services, in a news release.

“Most people can take for granted that when they turn on the tap or flush the toilet, water systems function exactly as they are supposed to, but the systems that provide critical water and wastewater services are aging.”

The hidden infrastructure that reliably brings clean water to homes and businesses, and takes it away after it has been used are showing the effects of a century, or more, of running 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. The problems our drinking water and wastewater systems face are multi-faceted. Drought, flooding, infrastructure failure, age, and climate change are just a few of the issues stressing our water and wastewater systems.

The Value of Water Coalition is coordinated by the US Water Alliance. For more information about this ongoing campaign, please visit imagineadaywithoutwater.org.    For more information on Durham Region’s water systems, please visit durham.ca/watervalue.
