Meetings to address regional review

By Dave Flaherty/The Oshawa Express

The province is in the midst of its first review of regional governments in two decades, and residents of Oshawa and Durham Region can be part of the process.

This Thursday (April 11), council will meet to consider a number of resolutions in regards to the review.

In March, council deferred voting on a motion, which calls for the city to endorse Durham’s current two-tier municipal system, until after the public meeting is held.

The motion, as currently presented, states the city does not support any type of amalgamation involving Oshawa.

A public meeting was held earlier this month but only two speakers shared their opinions.

The Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing is hosting a public meeting to hear from residents and business owners on Monday, April 29.

The meeting will be held at regional headquarters, located at 605 Rossland Road East in Whitby.

During the meeting, the two special advisors appointed by the provincial government will hear five-to-10 minute presentations regarding governance, decision-making and service delivery within Durham Region, and its local municipalities such as the City of Oshawa.

Comments can also be submitted through the ministry’s website by Tuesday, April 23.

A live stream of the meeting will be available at durham.ca.

The Ford government announced the regional review shortly after taking office in the summer of 2018.

It is expected recommendations from the special advisors will come later this year.
