Lakeview Beach East unsafe for swimming

Swimmers in Oshawa may have to look elsewhere as one of the city’s public beaches has been deemed unsuitable for aquatic use.

According to the Durham Region Health Department’s latest water testing results, Lakeview Beach East has been ‘posted’ for having elevated E.coli levels.

The results, released on July 12, show the public swimming area’s E.coli levels are higher than the provincial standard of 200 E.coli per 100 ml of water.

This is the first time Lakeview Beach East has been posted since testing began in June.

Health Department officials remain unable to test at Lakeview Beach West due to restricted access.

Oshawa is not alone on the list as seven of the region’s 11 weekly-tested beaches were found to have high E.coli levels.

The health department advises that residents do not swim in beach water for at least 48 hours after heavy rainfall, as bacteria can increase due to runoff.
