DRPS seeks input on action plan to combat systemic racism, improve transparency
The Durham Regional Police Services Board is seeking the community’s input on its Action Plan to Enhance Trust and Confidence in policing in Durham.
Throughout 2020, events across North America have led to substantial discussion regarding the effects of systemic racism, and how to address and eliminate these effects.
“Trust and confidence in policing institutions have been challenged over this period,” states the board. “We have also witnessed a heightened awareness of the importance of a more effective response to mental health calls, including the significance of de-escalation.”
The board says it has a “profound appreciation” for its police officers, who place their own safety at risk to protect the community.
“Members of the DRPS are respected for their courage, integrity and professionalism,” the board continues, noting there is always opportunity for improvement.
“The Board is committed to the change that is necessary to ensure that our Police Service operates as effectively as possible and in the best interests of all citizens. We recognize that the police must have high levels of trust of their community to perform their duties to a high standard, and this trust must continue to be earned, and to be nurtured, and never taken for granted.”
The board developed the proposed Action Plan as part of the next steps in moving forward, which outlines a strategy for greater transparency, improved practices and services in the areas of diversity and inclusion, and strengthening the response to mental health calls.
The board will be holding a special meeting on Jan. 26 at 7 p.m. for the community to provide input on the plan.
Those interested in participating in the meeting can submit an outline of their deputation in writing to alongo@drps.ca. The deadline for submissions is Jan. 11.
Deputations need to be a maximum of five minutes.
The meeting will take place virtually due to current COVID-19 restrictions, and participants will deliver their deputation via a web-based platform (Microsoft Teams).
Members of the public wishing to submit a written submission without a verbal deputation at the Jan. 26 meeting can submit to alongo@drps.ca prior to Jan. 25.
