The Durham Youth Council is standing up for the region’s green spaces.
In a resolution passed at its latest meeting, the council is calling for the promotion of locally-grown food, investing in public transit and providing residents with the information they need regarding decisions being made that could affect Durham’s environment.
“With a growing Region, the balance between expansion and protection has never been more delicate,” states Kyle Fitzgerald, Durham youth chair, in a news release.
“It is important that young people are heard now, to help shape the environment we will inherit”.
“This declaration serves as a reminder to public officials to develop policies that will ensure that the environment is well taken care of for years to come,” states Tenzin Shomar, chair of the council’s health and social services committee, which drafted the declaration.
