With the holiday season finally here, Durham police are reminding retailers and residents to be on the lookout for counterfeit currency.

Police say they typically see an increase in fake American money this time of the year, so people should take a second look if they receive any. The notes most commonly faked are $20, $50 and $100 bills.

For retailers that may receive such bills, police are advising that staff be educated about the security features found on the currency, revisit store policies on accepting American currency, watch for customers making small purchases with large bills, never to get involved in an altercation with a potential suspect and to contact police with any suspicions.

If you believe counterfeit money has been passed at your store or you have witnessed someone trying to pass it off, please contact police at 1-888-579-1520, ext. 6234.
