What is wrong with people's heads?

While shopping the other day, I came across a black Hyundai Tucson in the parking lot.

It was a hot day, but I could make out two children inside the vehicle, which had all its windows and doors shut tight. The children inside were audibly crying. No parent was present or even in the vicinity.

I went inside the store and informed the manager of the situation outside, in the process alerting many of the people in the store that there was a car outside with two children locked in the backseat, crying and presumably hot.

The manager and I went outside and took down the licence plate of the vehicle.

Afterwards, a woman who had been in line waiting to pay for her purchases did so and left the store. She headed for the Tucson, got in and drove away.

So, while this entire scene was playing out, this person said and did nothing. Instead, she just waited in line to buy her stuff while her children were sweltering in the car.

So I guess her purchases were more important than her children’s lives.

What is wrong with people? Every summer we have to deal with these stories of children and animals being locked in hot cars, sometimes with terrible consequences. How have people not learned yet that this is bad? Are we so lazy we can’t even crack a window, or better yet, simply be responsible human beings?

Give your heads a shake.
