Unemployment rate goes down in the Oshawa area

More people are working and fewer are unemployed in the Oshawa area.

According to new numbers from Statistics Canada, the Oshawa census metropolitan area – which also includes Whitby and Clarington – saw a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 6.3 per cent in September, down from 6.9 per cent the month before. This amounted to approximately 215,200 people working in the area, up from 213,400.

This also marks a steep decrease from the same time last year, when the Oshawa census metropolitan area saw an unemployment rate of 8.3 per cent, representing 185,500 people working.

Across the country, the unemployment rate stayed the same at 7.0 per cent – however, the number of people working increased, with 67,000 people finding work in September. Statistics Canada attributes most of that increase to part-time work.

Just as is the case with Oshawa, across the country, more people were working last month than the month before, with employment rising by 0.8 per cent in a 12-month span.
