Unemployment down

While the rest of the country saw a slight uptick in unemployment for the end of 2015, the Oshawa area saw it fall.

According to new numbers from Statistics Canada, the Oshawa census metropolitan area – which also includes Whitby and Clarington – saw its unadjusted unemployment rate fall to 6.3 per cent in December 2015 from 7.4 per cent the month before.

Nationwide, the unadjusted unemployment rate rose to 6.5 per cent from 6.4 per cent over the same timeframe.

The Oshawa area is in much the same shape as the end of 2014, when the unadjusted unemployment rate was at 6.3 per cent. Nationwide, that number was 6.2 per cent.

According to a news release from Statistics Canada, the country saw growth in the amount of people employed in health care and social assistance, educational services, and finance, insurance, real estate and leasing, and a decline in accommodation, food services and agriculture.
