Unemployment down

Oshawa area's rate drops to 6.0 per cent

Fewer people were without a job in the Oshawa area last month.

According to new data from Statistics Canada, the Oshawa census metropolitan area – which also includes Whitby and Clarington – saw a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 6.0 per cent in October, down from 6.3 per cent the month before. This marks the second straight month of declines, and also tied with April for the lowest rates seen this year.

Numbers are also down substantially from a year ago, with October 2015 having an unemployment rate of 8.1 per cent.

Across the country, the unemployment rate remained the same as it did last month, sitting at 7.0 per cent. However, according to a news release from Statistics Canada, the number of people employed did go up by 44,000 last month, but with more people participating in the labour market, the unemployment number stayed the same.
